PORTLETHEN ACADEMY, Portlethen, Aberdeenshire

Portlethen Academy in Aberdeenshire is one of many PFI/PPP projects we have been involved with since 1998, when this method of school financing and building commenced.

Triple ‘Cave' Climbing Frame

This is the ‘Cave' climbing frame which is a standard piece of equipment in educational establishments. More normally seen with 2 'gates', this example has 3, to provide an increased activity area.

The frames have high-level linking poles which allow for the suspension of climbing ropes, rope ladders, etc.

They are braced in position with a high-level tensioned wire rope and fold flat against the wall when not in use.

Roof-Mounted Climbing Ropes

Climbing ropes can be provided on a wall mounted frame or, as seen here, on a roof-mounted trackway.

These ropes are moved out for use and in against the wall for storage using a simple hauling line. Ropes can be provided in lengths to suit the roof height.

This particular example shows how the unit can be neatly integrated into a suspended ceiling arrangement, where secondary steel is provided.

Wall-Hinged Double Beams

Wall-hinged Counterbalanced Beams (or Double ‘Booms') are another standard item of gymnasium equipment, used for balancing activities.

The 2 horizontal beams can be moved up and down using hauling lines, aided by a set of counterbalance weights inside the unit.

This image shows 2 side-by-side, one in its storage position, against the wall, and the other set up ready for use. Like most wall-hinged apparatus these brace in position using high-level tensioned wire rope.

In this particular installation, the units had to allow for access to the stores, so layout was critical.

Trampoline Overhead Safety Rig

Seen here is a roof-mounted trampoline Overhead Safety Rig.

It consists of a belt (twisting or tumbling belt) suspended from control ropes, which allows an instructor to support a performer whilst learning more advanced moves.

Again, this example has been fitted to neatly integrate with the suspended ceiling.

Practice Basketball Goals

Practice basketball goals can be provided to a variety of specifications. Examples include side hinged, fixed and height adjustable.

This example is a 1.2m projection, fixed, height-adjustable goal with the added option of a clear acrylic backboard.

A ‘corkscrew' mechanism built into the frame of the goal allows the backboard and ring to be adjusted from standard regulation height of 3050mm to 2059mm for junior / wheelchair using players. This is done using a winding pole, supplied with the goals.

Archery Curtains

The white curtain seen here is an Archery Curtain, but can also be used for golf practice. The curtain is set 1m from the back wall to prevent stray arrows/golf balls from damaging the wall, rebounding off the wall or becoming damaged themselves. This creates a 'No-Go' area behind the curtain.

An Archery Curtain will usually only be 3m high x 8m wide, but on this project we were asked to provide a full-height, full-width curtain which was achieved using 2 sections, slightly overlapping in the centre.

You can see the curtain is stored out of hall users' way with a pulley system.

Matchplay Basketball Goals

Shown here is one of our Matchplay Basketball Goals. This is a standard full-size basketball goal suitable for competition play.

This example shows the added option of a clear acrylic backboard. It hinges back against the wall for storage when not in use.

This goal is fixed directly to the blockwork, but where no suitable blockwork exists, goals can be fixed to secondary steelwork where provided.

Divisional Curtains

Standard divisional curtains, used to divide halls into distinct teaching or playing areas. They are normally in a 50mm mesh and can be provided with a 2m sight screen sewn into the base (as seen here) to prevent distraction.

The curtains are suspended from roof-fixed trackway and run on self-lubricating runners ensuring they can be pulled out and stored with ease.

Curtains can be stored in a standard wall-mounted bag or hoisted above head height with a pulley system as seen in the background of this picture.

Divisional curtains can be supplied in a selection of colours. Please ask for further details.
